Mr Tashakul Abbas Warraich (PP-70, Gujranwala-XII), Rai Muhammad Murtaza Iqbal (PP-203, Sahiwal-VI), Mr Fateh Khaliq (PP-84, Khushab-IV), Mr Shafay Hussain (PP-31, Gujrat-V), Hafiz Farhat Abbas (PP-157, Lahore-XIII) and Nawab Zada Waseem Khan Badozai (PP-214, Multan-II), Members-elect made oath as Member, Provincial Assembly of the Punjab and the Speaker administered the oath.
ELECTION OF SPEAKER
The outgoing Speaker announced that two nominations papers were received for the election of Speaker on February 23, 2024 by 06:00 p.m. i.e. on the day preceding the day on which the Election of Speaker was to be held. Mr Ahmad Khan (PP-87) was nominated by the Members of Opposition while Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan (PP-179) was nominated by PML-N and allied parties as their candidate for Speaker.
The Election of Speaker was held through secret ballot in terms of Rule 9 (1) of Rules of Procedure of Provincial Assembly of the Punjab, 1997. The Speaker announced the result that 322 votes were cast out of which 2 votes were rejected. Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan secured 224 votes out of 320 valid votes while Mr Ahmad Khan secured 96 votes. The outgoing Speaker, Mr Muhammad Sibtain Khan declared Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan (PP-179) to have been elected as Speaker Punjab Assembly. Later he administered oath to him in the form set out in the third Schedule to the Constitution. After taking oath as Speaker Punjab Assembly, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan assumed the chair and conducted the election of Deputy Speaker.
ELECTION OF DEPUTY SPEAKER
The newly elected Speaker announced that two nominations papers were received for the election of Deputy Speaker on February 23, 2024 by 06:00 p.m. i.e. on the day preceding the day on which the Election of Deputy Speaker was to be held. Mr Zaheer Iqbal (PP-253) was nominated candidate of PML-N and allied parties, while Mr Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Riaz (PP-215) was nominated by the opposition as their candidate for Deputy Speaker. The Election of Deputy Speaker was held through secret ballot in terms of Rule 9 (1) of Rules of Procedure of Provincial Assembly of the Punjab, 1997. After election of Deputy Speaker, the Speaker announced the result that 323 votes were cast and none was rejected. Mr Zaheer Iqbal (PP-253) secured 220 votes while Mr Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Riaz (PP-215) bagged 103 votes. The Speaker announced Mr Zaheer Iqbal to have been elected as Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly. Later he administered oath to him in the form set out in the third Schedule to the Constitution.
The Members congratulated Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan and Mr Zaheer Iqbal on assuming the offices of Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.
The Speaker announced that on February 26, 2024, the election of Chief Minister would be held. Later, Secretary Assembly announced the procedure to be adopted for the election of Chief Minister.
The House was then adjourned to meet on Monday, February 26, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. for the election of Chief Minister.
