Makhdoom Syed Ali Akbar Mehmood son of Makhdoom Syed Hassan Mehmood was born on May 12, 1963 in Karachi. He has obtained the degree of B.A(Hons). He remained Member, Provincial Assembly of the Punjab for four consecutive terms during 1988-99 and also served as Advisor to Chief Minister during 1991-92. He has returned to the Punjab Assembly for the fifth term in byeelections held on August 22, 2013 against the seat vacated by his nephew Makhdoom Mustafa Mehmud, who had won both National and Provincial seats and opted for National Assembly seat. He comes of a renowned political family. His brother, Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mehmud was Member of Punjab Assembly during 1985-88, 1988-90 (Minister for E&T), 2008-12; served as MNA during 1990-93, 1993-96, 1997-99 and also functioned as Minister of State; as Governor of the Punjab during 2012-13. His Nephews, Makhdum Syed Murtaza Mehmud and Makhdum Syed Mustafa Mehmood are sitting MPA and MNA respectively. His grandfather, (late) Makhdoom Ul Mulk Syed Ghulam Miran Shah was an eminent personality of former Bahawalpur State who actively participated in Pakistan Movement before partition and was appointed as Minister for Refugees and Rehabilitation by the Amir of Bahawalpur and was awarded the title of “Makhdoom Ul Mulk” in recognition of his meritorious services; his father served as Chief Minister of Bahawalpur State as well as Minister for Education and Health; and also functioned as Member of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan during 1951; as Member, Provincial Assembly of West Pakistan during 1956-58 (Minister for Information, Local Government and Social Welfare); and as Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly during 1986. Makhdoom Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Speaker National Assembly is his first cousin.
