Oath

 

Members-elect Mr Muhammad Tahir, (PP-284) and Mr Khizer Hussain Mazari, (PP-297) made oath as Members, Provincial Assembly of the Punjab. The Speaker administered the oath.

 

Election of Chief Minister under Article 130(3) & (4) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan:

 

The Speaker announced that a total of six nomination papers were received by 05:00 pm on February 25, 2024, for the election of Chief Minister as envisaged in Rule 17 of the Rules of Procedure of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab, 1997. Three nomination papers were received for Ms Maryam Nawaz Sharif, MPA (PP-159), while three nomination papers were received for Mr Aftab Ahmad Khan, MPA (PP-108).

 

Secretary Assembly announced the procedure for the election of Chief Minister as provided in Second Schedule to the Rules ibid and informed the Members about division numbers allotted to them. He explained that in case of elected Members their respective constituency No (PP No) would be their division number and for Members elected on Reserved Seats, W or NM number allotted to them by the Assembly Secretariat would be their division number. Before the commencement of voting, bells would be rung for five minutes to enable Members not present in the Chamber to be present and all the entrances to the lobbies would be locked. He further added that those who wanted to vote for Ms Maryam Nawaz Sharif, MPA (PP-159) would go to the Eastern Lobby on the right side of Speaker and those members who wanted to vote for Mr Aftab Ahmad Khan, MPA (PP-108) would go to the Western Lobby on his left side. Tellers would be posted on each lobby to record the votes of the Members by marking their division number on division list. After the conclusion of voting, the result of the count would be presented to the Speaker and bells would be rung for two minutes to enable the Members to return to the Chamber. After the bells stopped ringing, the Speaker would announce the result.

 

The Election of the Chief Minister was held as per procedure mentioned above. After counting of the votes, the Speaker announced that Ms Maryam Nawaz Sharif, MPA (PP-159) secured 220 votes while Mr Aftab Ahmad Khan, MPA (PP-108) secured no vote because opposition members had boycotted the election of Chief Minister. He declared Ms Maryam Nawaz Sharif, MPA (PP-159) as successful candidate to be the next Chief Minister of Punjab. The Chief Minister elect made her maiden speech in the House.

 

The Speaker then adjourned the House sine die.
