Dr Asma Mamdot, daughter of Nawabzada Zulfiqar Ali Khan Mamdot was born in Lahore. She obtained the degree of MBBS from King Edward Medical University, Lahore. She belongs to a renowned family of Mamdots and Legharis. Her paternal grandfather, Nawab Sir Shahnawaz Khan of Mamdot was President, Muslim League, Punjab during 1938 and played a yeoman’s role in the making of Pakistan. The services of the Mamdot family, especially her grandfather, Nawab Sir Shahnawaz Khan and her illustrious uncle, Nawab Iftikhar Hussain Khan outweigh the services of every other political family of the Punjab. Her uncle, Nawab Iftikhar Hussain Khan was the first Premier (i.e. Chief Minister) of the Punjab after independence, later he also served as Governor Sindh. During the independence movement, her father had the honour of looking after the Quaid-e-Azam whenever he visited Lahore. Her father became President, Muslim League Punjab and also served as President, Tehrik-e-Karkunan-e-Pakistan. Her mother, Begum Afifa Mamdot, remained member of Punjab Assembly during 1988-90 and has also served as Federal Minister for Health, Social Welfare and Special Education. Her paternal grandfather, Nawab Sir Muhammad Jamal Khan Leghari first represented Dera Ghazi Khan in the Punjab Legislative Council in 1921; later in the Punjab Legislative Assemblies till 1949; he had also the honour to chair the first session of the West Punjab Legislative Assembly after independence and the opening session of the 1951 Punjab Legislative Assembly. The former President of Pakistan, Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari is her cousin
